beta.quran.com

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

As I'm currently working on developing the next version of quran.com (إن شاء الله) I thought I'd take the opportunity to post to our much neglected blog. I've personally never taken up blogging, but I guess it's not too late to start. إن شاء الله I'll keep everyone updated throughout development via this blog.

I'm currently fixing and finishing up the Arabic view of beta.quran.com (beta.quran.com/ar). After mirroring page elements into right-to-left directionality with CSS, I'll need to translate all the English words used in the interface into Arabic.

Tangent:

Fortunately, we've implemented a great localization/internationalization back-end for the new quran.com, so it shouldn't be too difficult. The system not only handles interface localization but we've extended it into content as well so that even individual ayah words can have localized translations for any given language. I designed the system to scale with the intention of, at some point (perhaps when the user/account base is large enough) implement a feedback mechanism allowing users to suggest translations for a given language for both interface keywords and individual ayah words. إن شاء الله the system is capable of handling any language, so we may see in the future quran.com/fr/*, quran.com/de/* and even quran.com/zh/*.

Anyway, after finishing off the Arabic view of beta.quran.com, إن شاء الله I'll start working on the planned "[re]-share" function so that users can start sharing ayahs and making da3wa through Facebook, Twitter and Google Buzz. The plan is to set it up in a flexible yet easy to use way, so that the user can choose to share specific resources alongside the ayah (i.e. translations or tafsir if using the Arabic view) and/or post their own comments alongside.

introducing waqt.org

salam 3alaikum,

i wanted to write up a brief post about a new prayertime information service, waqt.org.  waqt aims to maintain an extremely clean and simple interface while providing powerful features.  rss feeds and geolocation support are some of its unique features. currently, it only supports the north america method of calculation, but we will insha'Allah allow it to soon accept other methods.

waqt.org is an open source project, and you can follow it's development on github.

wsalam 3alaikum.

in preperation for ramadan…

salam 3alaikum -
in preparation for ramadan, al7amdulillah, the following has taken place:

1. i've (finally) caught up on all the pending emails.
2. added 3 new recitations based on emails sent to me by users of the site, may Allah reward them (Husari with Doori Qira'a, Muhammad Hassan, and Salah Al-Hashim - the latter two courtesy of 4quran.com and el-moslem.com, respectively).
3. most importantly, i've finally fixed the id3 tags on all the files.

jazakumAllah khair.
wsalams.

the future of quranicrealm

salam 3alaikum,
it's been a while since this blog has been updated, but hope insha'Allah everyone is doing well.

have been working on the alpha version of quranicrealm (which you may have seen linked off of quranicrealm). this version includes many new things - improved searching and better arabic images are the most important.

more importantly, however, is that soon, quranicrealm will insha'Allah be merged with quran.com. currently, you will find only a few things (the images, for example) merged with quran.com. the transliteration search and more will be merged soon insha'Allah.

moreover, a lot of this stuff is becoming open source, and we ultimately plan on opening up APIs as well to make development easy. i will update this blog as the work progresses insha'Allah.

wsalam 3alaikum.
